This is a guest post from Jim courtright from the blog “The Serenity of One”. “The Serenity of One” is a journal that has been a source of inspiration for a few people, and Jim is one of them.
Jim’s post is the result of an exchange between him and two other bloggers on blogs that he follows, and it’s really a great read.
This week Jim is talking about how to handle one of the toughest situations that he’s ever had to face, which is an online disagreement with a friend over something. He mentions one day when a conversation with a friend got so heated that he couldn’t stand it. The friend then decided to give him a big lecture about how he needs to be nicer to people.
The problem is if you’re being a dick about something, you lose what little respect you have.
Being a dick about something can lead to your getting burned. I know this from personal experience, which is why I like the advice Jim gave me: “Be nice. Be nice to people. Even people you don’t like, but you have to be nice to them. For example, if you go to a restaurant and the waitress says, “I’d like a salad,” you can say, “I don’t like salads,” or I don’t like salad.
And if you go to a restaurant and the waiter says, I need to have a salad, you can say, I dont want salad. Or if you see a friend and he goes to the restroom and you hear him say, I need to go to the loo, then you can say, I want to go to the loo. That’s the simple, straight forward way to express the same idea.
There are thousands of things that can be expressed and done as simple as that, but the simplest of them are actually the hardest to execute. They can feel a bit awkward to say, but you can make them look like a simple thing.
It’s a bit of a shame, as a lot of our thoughts revolve around the toilet. But it is a constant reminder that we’re all just a bunch of automatons, waiting to be sent to a different part of the universe.
The simple truth is that you are the one that has to act if you want to live. You do not have to do anything. You just wait. This is not a game, so that means that you don’t have to fight, you don’t have to kill. And that means you don’t have to do anything you like. Just wait and see what happens.
